Tunbridge Wells House

This house in Tunbridge Wells consists of the complete rebuild of an existing early 20th century house with a contemporary addition. The base of the existing house is Tunbridge Wells sandstone and the upper storey is rendered. The addition is mainly timber framed with a timber clad exterior. We worked closely with Tunbridge Wells planning department in Conservation officer to achieve a composition that enhances the original architecture while adding a significant contemporary addition.

The interior of the house flows between the upper entrance hall to the garden level with a large sitting room area and open kitchen / dining space. The snug, study, pantry and laundry are arranged around the perimeter creating dynamic vertical and diagonal views. The upper floor consists of four bedrooms all with ensuite bathrooms. The main bedroom has a rooflit dressing room and large bathroom with a garden view. The house will be highly insulated and heated by an air source heat pump and MVHR system.

The southwest facing garden has several levels that are linked through a series of ramps and steps giving level access to all areas. Planning consent was obtained in May 2023 and the project has now started on site. It is due to be completed mid 2025.

The main staircase is in the centre of the house with a full width rooflight that brings sunlight into the space. Vertical and diagonal views reach from ground to first floor across the staircase, linking both floors in a visually dynamic way. (paintings in the images by Tom Hammick)
