This is an extension to a Grade II* listed thatched cottage adjacent to the grounds of the Grade I listed St Mary Magdalene church in Bedfordshire. The scheme increases the accommodation in the existing house while creating a series of contrasting external spaces. Working closely with the local authorities to ensure the heritage value is maintained, planning permission was granted for a sunken extension building, forming part of the landscape. A solid wall addresses the approach from the house, forming a kitchen garden wall, while the other side facing the church fully opens towards the mature garden. A 1940’s brick water tower is also to be converted into guest accommodation and a gym.
